In several of the studies, factors associated with non-adherence also were described. These included lower education level, depression, and polypharmacy.
"Altogether, this systematic review confirms that the burden of non-adherence is substantial and significant in SLE," the researchers stated.
They pointed out that the studies that used self-report data reported lower rates of non-adherence, which may relate to social desirability bias and thus may represent an overestimation of adherence.
