reports researchers at the National Institutes of Health have discovered the “molecular mechanisms that could be responsible for symptoms of a severe form of premenstrual syndrome,” Premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD). They found that “turning off estrogen and progesterone in test subjects made the symptoms [of PMDD] disappear,” suggesting that that PMDD occurs with cellular response to the hormones. Researchers hope a concrete biological cause for the disorder can open the door to improved treatment.
