“Long-term bisphosphonate therapy can change bones at the microscopic level to make them more susceptible to the rare catastrophic transverse breaks known as atypical femoral fractures,” researchers found after examining “biopsies of cortical bone from the femurs of 50 women in their 70s and 80s.” The findings were published online in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
