“The ‘obesity paradox,’ a survival advantage in obese patients with cardiovascular disease (CVD) reported by some studies, disappeared when investigators took a closer look at it” in research published in PLOS One. When investigators “focused on only incident CVD cases in a large nationally representative cohort” that included “more than 30,000 people in the Health and Retirement Study,” then “used patients’ pre-diagnosis weight, there was no longer any survival advantage, suggesting that previous studies suffered from bias and confounding.”
