“The risk of congenital malformations may be substantially higher for babies exposed to antithyroid medications in utero,” researchers found. Expectant mothers “with Graves’ disease medicated during the first trimester showed a higher prevalence of babies born with either overall or organ-specific congenital malformations versus mothers not on the medication,” the study revealed. The findings of the 12,891-case study were published online in the Annals of Internal Medicine. Medscape (1/22, Brown) also covers the study.
