Injecting Arthritic Knees Carries Sepsis Risk Study identified four risk factors for sepsis after injections for knee pain.
Bacterial culture determined that Staphylococcus aureus was the by far the most common microorganism in septic arthritis (47.6%), while low-virulence coagulase-negative (CNN) Staphylococcus was most commonly implicated in chronic low-grade infection (31%), followed by Propionibacterium acnes at 24.1%.
