Brain-Eating Amoeba Attacks Swimming Boy, 14 Hunter Boutain is in a coma on life support after getting the infection when he went swimming in a freshwater lake. He is being treated for suspected primary amebic meningoencephalitis (PAM), a rare and often fatal brain infection caused by the Naegleria fowleri amoeba which is found in warm freshwater. There have been 35 confirmed cases of infection in the last 10 years in the US, CBS News reported.
