Menu Mandates” Criticized For Being Ineffective Against Obesity.
reports a study released by the Cato Institute found that compelling “restaurants, movie theaters, and grocery stores to put calorie counts and nutritional information on menus has no long-term impact on obesity.” Advocates of “menu mandates” insist they “would nudge consumers to eat less and would cut obesity, while skeptics said” they “would put a cost on business, be ineffective and was part of an ever-growing nanny state.” The article points out that the Affordable Care Act has menu mandates, whose implementation was delayed until 2017. The mandates are expected to impact some 300,000 restaurants.
