California Details Paralysis Cases Mystery of causes, connections still unsolved Polio????
The California records show an uptick in incidence of acute flaccid myelitis from August 2014 to January 2015, which coincides with an outbreak of enterovirus D68, a respiratory illness.
Van Haren and colleagues noted that although they isolated enterovirus D68 from respiratory, serum, and stool samples from nine patients, they didn't find the virus in their cerebrospinal fluid.
"The etiology of acute flaccid myelitis cases in our series remains undetermined," they wrote, noting, however, that the cases are very similar to those seen after outbreaks of other enterovirus species, including A71 and polio. http://www.medpagetoday.com/Neurology/GeneralNeurology/55378?xid=nl_mpt_DHE_2015-12-23&eun=g721819d0r
