No Benefit Seen for Probiotics in Ulcerative Colitis
The use of probiotics was not associated with significant improvements in the maintenance of remission in patients with ulcerative colitis, a Cochrane systematic review found.
In four studies that compared probiotics with mesalazine, the likelihood of clinical or endoscopic relapse did not differ between the two treatments (OR 1.29, 95% CI 0.92-1.80, P=0.46, I 2=0%), according to Morris Gordon, MBChB, PhD, of the University of Central Lancashire in Preston, England. http://www.medpagetoday.com/MeetingCoverage/AIBD/55185?xid=nl_mpt_DHE_2015-12-12&eun=g721819d0r
